International archives congress to be hosted in Brisbane

The National Archives of Australia (NAA) will host the 2012 International Council on Archives (ICA) Congress, the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis, announced today.

Senator Brandis said he particularly welcomed the decision of the NAA to hold the event in Brisbane.

“The ICA is the pre-eminent international body in the archival profession and this will be the first ICA congress in the southern hemisphere.”

“This is great success for Australia, and international recognition of the high standing in which the NAA is held in the international archival arena.”

This will be the 17th ICA Congress, and is expected to being 2000 delegates to Brisbane.

Themes planned for the Brisbane congress include ‘archives in the digital age’ and ‘archival education’—areas where Australia is recognised among the world’s leaders.
