POINT NEPEAN ADVERTISEMENT PROGRAM

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Fran Bailey MP, announced today the advertising program for the tender for the lease of the 90-hectare portion of the Defence site at Point Nepean would begin on Saturday, 6 September.

This follows the Howard Government’s decision to offer a lease for the 90-hectare portion of the site in recognition of Point Nepean’s unique environmental and heritage values, and followed extensive consultation with the community.

“Advertisements for the tender for the lease will first appear this Saturday 6 September, with the tender closing at 2pm on Monday 6 October 2003,” Ms Bailey said.

“Tender submissions will be required to detail how the heritage and environmental values of the site will be protected, the proposed use of the site and how it would benefit the community, including the issue of public access.

“Under the lease, only education, recreational, community and tourism uses will be permitted. No private residential development, subdivision or “millionaire’s compounds” will be allowed,” Ms Bailey said.

The offer of a lease for the site will achieve the 12 key aspects of the Draft Community Master Plan including public ownership of the site, exclusion of residential development, restoration of public access, conservation of significant habitats and management of the heritage buildings.

Tender documentation will be available from Thursday 11 September 2003. Copies of all site studies and the Draft Community Master Plan will be available on-line from Monday 8 September 2003 and on CD-ROM from Thursday 11 September 2003.

All information will be available via the Defence website at www.defence.gov.au.

Tenders will close at 2pm Monday 6 October 2003. Tenderers will be notified of the outcome within two weeks of the tender close, and a lease for the site will be in place by the end of October 2003.
