SENATOR THE HON ROD KEMP Minister for the Arts and Sport

Media Release

Sports Minister launches 2002 AIS/National Canoe Slalom squad The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, officially launched the 2002 AIS/National Canoe Slalom Squad at the Australian Institute of Sport today.

Senator Kemp said the primary focus of the 14-strong squad would be to prepare for the world championships in France in August.

‘The campaign begins with World Cup competition in China next month, and will be followed by an AIS training camp in Germany and four world cup races in Europe,’ the Minister said.

Canoe Slalom became an AIS sport in January 2001 to capitalise on the legacy of the Sydney Olympics. Institute Director Michael Scott says since then the program has experienced some very good results.

‘Robin Bell (C1) - who is ranked sixth in the world - is the current world championship silver medallist,’ Mr Scott said. ‘He also won a silver medal at the Augsburg and Prague World Cups in 2001. Kai Swoboda and Andrew Farrance (C2) finished eighth in a world cup final in 2001, while Louise Natoli and John Wilkie were the overall leading performers in the men’s and women’s kayak events with top-14 and top-16 placings respectively at world cup events.’

Head Coach of the program, five-time world champion Richard Fox says the AIS camp in Canberra is for strength and fitness testing and to plan the team’s international campaign.

‘We have a strong team in all classes and are looking forward to a busy season of world cups and world championship competition,’ Mr Fox said.

The program - which is funded by the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission - is based in Sydney and utilises the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, venue for the slalom events at the Sydney 2000 Games.
