The Hon Simon Crean MP MINISTER FOR TRADE

6 December 2007

Visit to Indonesia and Singapore My first overseas visit as Trade Minister will be to Jakarta on 6 December to meet with Indonesian Trade Minister Dr Mari Pangestu and other Indonesian Ministers.

On the visit I will pursue a range of trade issues, including a possible free trade agreement between our two countries and a possible ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand free trade agreement.

I will also meet with local members of the Australian business community before leaving for the Trade Ministers Dialogue Climate Change issues in Bali.

The primary focus of the Bali meeting of Trade Ministers will be climate change and related economic and trade issues. In particular, the use of trade policy tools in addressing climate change and sustainable development will be discussed.

It is important that responding climate change is not just seen as an environmental imperative, but also as an economic opportunity.

While in Bali, I will meet with a number of my trade counterparts to discuss trade issues of importance to Australia, including progress of the WTO Doha Round.

On 9 December, I will be going to Singapore to meet with senior representatives of the Singaporean government, including Foreign Minister George Yeo.

I will be meeting members of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, as well as representatives of key Singaporean companies with investments in Australia. Singapore is our largest trading partner in ASEAN and a major investor in Australia.
