Woodchippers, Polluters Picnic -Brown

Aussie Icons Face Tax Axe

“The GST package will hit the environment hard”, Senator Bob Brown said today.

“It’s a woodchippers’ picnic . Chainsaws will be GST -free; so will the log trucks taking forests to the mill, so will the woodchip exports.

“And the polluters are picnicking too: the $4 billion gift to the transport industry in diesel fuel tax holiday gives road an advantage over rail and a boost to greenhouse gas and carcinogen pollution in Australia.

“Besides, conservation groups like the Wilderness Society, Australian Conservation Foundation and Greenpeace will have a 10% cut in their income from membership fees, grants, sponsorships, raffles, cake stalls and sales.

“Aussie icons like Surf Lifesaving Clubs, larger Volunteer Bushfire Brigades and Landrace Groups, as well as sporting clubs and recreation groups from bushwalking to ballet will similarly face a 10% tax impost”, said Senator Brown.

“The big fudge in this package is the $7 billion the government cut out of community services two years ago. This is being used to fund the tax cuts and hand-outs to multinational mining corporations”, Senator Brown added.
