MEDIA RELEASE

Minister for Finance and Administration

THE HON JOHN FAHEY MP

FAHEY TOURS CROOKWELL FIRE DAMAGE

Today I have announced $50,000 in Commonwealth funding to assist bushfire victims in the Crookwell district.

I will tour the fire rav aged district this afternoon with local federal MP Alby Schultz.

We will meet with Crookwell Mayor Brian McGuinness before touring properties in the nearby region.

The people of the Southern Tablelands need to start rebuilding their properties and their local community.

Many of the affected families have farmed in the district for more than a century.

This money from the Commonwealth will boost funds available to help those farmers start the job of rebuilding.

The $50,000 grant will be added to a trust fund established by Crookwell Council with the Commonwealth Bank.

I am visiting the region at the invitation of Mr Schultz and the State Liberal candidate for Burrunjuck Mrs Gloria Schultz.

The fire, which made international news headlines, swept through the Southern Tablelands late last week, burning more than 32,000 hectares and killing 9,000 sheep. At its peak, the fire front stretched more than 40 kilometres.
