$4.5 million for education and training at Visy Park

The Minister for Education, Employment & Workplace Relations, Julia Gillard, today announced the Rudd Government will contribute $4.5 million to the redevelopment of Visy Park.

Visy Park is the official ground of the Carlton Football Club. The Club has embarked on a redevelopment project that will make Visy Park a community hub which promotes and demonstrates sustainable living.

The Rudd Government’s contribution of $4.5 million, through the Australian Apprentices Workforce Development program, will assist the development of education, training and research facilities.

Not only is the redevelopment supporting local jobs during an economic downturn but it will also improve education and training facilities at the historic premises for the long term benefit of the community.

The Carlton Football Club is already investing in programs for school students to enhance their understanding of environmental issues such as water conservation, energy use and recycling.

The funding will support the expansion of the Effective Disposals Environmental Schools program which involves player ambassadors teaching children from local schools about environmental issues.

The new 70 seat lecture theatre will increase the schools program capacity to accommodate up to 3800 students per year.

The redevelopment will also include the installation of infrastructure for solar energy, recycled water and rainwater harvesting.

Working in partnership with the Carlton Football Club, the AFL, the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government are also contributing a total of $7.5 million to the project.
