MEDIA RELEASE

The Hon. Fran Bailey, MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence

POINT COOK THE FOCUS FOR AIR FORCE CADETS

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Fran Bailey, will today be among the proud onlookers when about 700 Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) from across Victoria participate in the 4 Wing annual parade and inter-squadron drill competition at RAAF Williams Point Cook Base.

Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Angus Houston will be the Reviewing Officer for the parade and Air Commodore Rod Luke will also attend this important event for Victorian Air Force Cadets.

Ms Bailey said the event gives cadets the opportunity to demonstrate some of the skills they have been practising for many months.

“The parade will cap off an exciting day for the cadets, which will start with the annual 4 Wing Inter-Squadron Drill Competition,” Ms Bailey said.

“Cadets participating in that event will be vying for a highly coveted trophy, in fact it’s not unusual for many squadrons to start their precision marching training early in the year.

“After the final of that event, most of the cadets will be able to watch the finely tuned skills of the 4 Wing Drill Team as they give a demonstration called ‘drill over time’,” Ms Bailey said.

The Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) is a volunteer youth organisation dedicated to training young Australians to better equip them for community life. The organisation achieves this goal by conducting activities to promote qualities of leadership, self-reliance and initiative, and it does so within the aeronautical and military environs provided through its sponsorship by the Royal Australian Air Force.

The Commonwealth Government provides $30 million in support of the Australian Defence Force Cadets. This includes the Cadet Enhancement Program which supports the development, testing and implementation of initiatives to ensure that ADF Cadets remains a meaningful, positive and relevant experience for young Australians.
