HON WARREN TRUSS MP MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES AND FORESTRY

28 February 2000 AFFA00/25WT

NEW ACTION PLAN FOR AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND FIBRE

The new, revised Action Plan for Australian Agriculture, Food and Fibre will help encourage outward looking, profitable, sustainable and globally competitive food and fibre businesses that are recognised as world leaders in efficiency, product quality, innovation and market responsiveness.

The Plan was announced jointly today by the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss; the Executive Director of the National Farmer’s Federation (NFF), Wendy Craik, the head of the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC), Mitch Hooke and the Chief Executive of Supermarket to Asia Ltd, Jim Kennedy.

Following a review of the original Plan by around 60 key stakeholders in Brisbane last July, there was agreement that the processed food and beverages sector be integrated into a shortened and better-focussed plan.

The new Plan recognises the portfolio linkages that now exist between the agriculture, processed food and fibre industries, and provides a whole-of-chain approach to strategic planning. The new Plan's main objectives are:

profitable and globally competitive agribusinesses; ● sustainable resource use; ● consumer driven industry; ● food safety; and ●

better animal and plant health. ●

The Plan also identifies 20 priority actions that will help governments and industry achieve these objectives.

Mr Truss said that the Plan would also provide an important opportunity for government and industry to come together and learn from each other’s experiences and better understand their respective points-of-view.

Mr Truss paid tribute to the small group responsible for the bulk of the Plan’s development, which was comprised of representatives of: Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia (AFFA); the NFF; the AFGC and Supermarket to Asia Ltd (STA).

"The strengthening of the relationship between the NFF, the AFGC and STA was an important by-product of this process and will undoubtedly benefit Australia’s agriculture, food and fibre industries well into the new millennium," he said.
