Media Release The Hon Fran Bailey, MP

9 February 2007

The potential entry of Tiger Airways into the domestic aviation market could provide a welcome boost to the domestic tourism market, Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said today.

Tiger Airways has announced its intention to establish a new domestic airline in Australia. No details about routes have so far been announced.

"Low cost carriers have changed the face of tourism in Australia. Inter-state holidays that were once priced out of reach of many families, are now part and parcel of the holiday equation," Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, said today.

"The potential entry of another low cost carrier could deliver a welcome boost to the domestic tourism industry, which has struggled in recent years from tough competition from plasma TVs and other consumables."

Tourism Minister Fran Bailey also encouraged the development of more fly-and-drive packages, so the benefits of low cost carriers could reach further into regional areas.

"Australia has hidden treasures right throughout regional Australia, often only a few hours drive from the city," Fran Bailey said.

"While there are some great packages already in the market place, more integrated packages will help boost regional tourism. This will help create even more jobs and small business opportunities in regional Australia."
