M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 18th May 2008 BLUEPRINT FOR INDIGENOUS TOURISM Federal Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today congratulated the Anindilyakwa people of Groote Eylandt on the creation of the Dugong Beach Resort. Officially opened last night by the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, the resort stands as testament to what can be achieved by the dreams and hard work of Indigenous people on Indigenous country, said Mr Snowdon. “It is much more than a business. The beautiful Dugong Beach Resort is quite rightly a source of great pride to the traditional owners, offering training and employment for the future.” The $18 million resort was funded through the local community, the Aboriginal Benefit Trust, the Territory Government, and private developers. “The National Australia Bank should also be commended for their foresight and willingness to assist an Indigenous venture such as this,” said Mr Snowdon. “This alliance between the private sector, the local community, and Governments destroys the myth that you can’t invest in Aboriginal land. “The Dugong Beach Resort has been built and is operated by Groote Eylandt Bickerton Island Enterprises (GEBIE) the business arm of the Anindilyakwa Land Council, in association with John ‘Foxy’ Robinson, and is a stunning, low impact eco-resort. “Combining a cultural centre, conference rooms, bungalows and motel accommodation, it makes accessible the incredible beauty, strong culture and of course great fishing that is Groote Eylandt. “It is a wonderful achievement and is a blueprint for all Indigenous communities of what can be achieved by working together.” Media contact: Kate Sieper (Minister Snowdon) - 0488 484 689
