HOWARD GOVERNMENT LEADS THE WAY AT $500 AN HOUR

Four Howard Government Departments have lavished their top public servants with up to $500 an hour ‘leadership coaching’ classes.

It was revealed that the Howard Government spent over $80,000 in 2005 on leadership coaching; in answers to questions on notice put by Chair of Labor’s Wastewatch Committee Chris Bowen.

"It is very hard to see good value for money for taxpayers in these figures,” Mr Bowen said.

"Why is the Howard Government spending up to $500 an hour for one person to receive leadership coaching?

"Australia got by for years without having our top public servants coached; I don't see why we should be any different now.

"I am most disappointed about the figure for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The increasing number of veterans who are having their TPI claims rejected will be very disappointed with the amount of money going on leadership coaching.

"For one of the smallest Howard Government departments to splurge on a luxury like leadership coaching is a joke.

"The fact that some large and important departments have no leadership coaches at all show that they are not really necessary.

"I call on John Howard to direct that this waste of taxpayers money cease immediately," Wastewatch Committee Chair Chris Bowen said.
