O’LOUGHLIN SCHOOL FACILITY OPENED

A new classroom facility at O’Loughlin College was officially opened today by Northern Territory Senator Grant Tambling jointly with NT Education Minister, the Hon Chris Lugg MLA.

The new classroom block consists of five general learning areas and is an extension in response to continued growth in the junior secondary area.

"These outstanding facilities will help ensure all students at O’Loughlin College are encouraged to realise their potential and attain their goals" Senator Tambling said.

The project was funded by the Federal Government ($100,000) and the Northern Territory Government ($480,000).

Senator Tambling said the project demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing every student with the best possible learning environment through the provision of these new/updated facilities. It was an excellent example of Federal and Northern Territory Governments working together.

"The Federal Government is committed to ensuring every student receives a quality school education" Senator Tambling said. "For 1999-2000 the Federal Government is committed to providing $5 billion for schooling, an increase of $368 million over the previous year.

Additional funding is also being provided for literacy and numeracy, Asian languages, drug education and for a quality teacher programme to assist teachers to update their skills. Funding for indigenous students is continued and non-government schools will move to a fairer funding system in 2001.

"These initiatives recognise community demand for improved literacy standards, safe and drug-free schools and a greater focus on the quality of teaching" said Senator Tambling.
