MORE THAN A DAY OFF

It is Australia Day this coming Sunday and Member for Wannon - David Hawker - is urging western Victorians to show their pride in their country.

Mr. Hawker said we should look beyond the opportunity for a day off and take the chance to reflect on what makes Australia great.

“Research tells us that eight in 10 Australians say celebrations on Australia Day make them feel proud to be Australian,” Mr. Hawker said.

“Australia Day is about celebrating what unites us as Australians and those things we can be proud of like our people, our land, our diversity and indigenous cultures, our freedom and democracy and our belief in a fair go for all.

“There is a strong community spirit in the south west and Australia Day is the perfect opportunity for people to come together and build on that strength.”

Mr. Hawker said a recent Newspoll survey showed that nine in 10 Australians believed it was important to celebrate Australia Day.

He said that survey was done before the Bali bombings and the current bushfires, which should be bringing Australians even closer together.

“Most centres throughout the region will be holding ceremonies and I look forward to attending functions in Hamilton and Beaufort,” Mr. Hawker said.

He said looked he forward to meeting people on Sunday as they gathered to celebrate what makes Australia great and show a united front against those who would seek to take this from us.

Release Ends.
