Brough Must Say When He Knew About Phantom Jobs Cheryl Kernot - Shadow Minister for Employment and Training

Media Statement - 25 June 2001

In Question Time today the Minister for Employment Services, Mal Brough, repeatedly and comprehensively failed to answer any questions concerning his knowledge or involvement in the practice of Leonie Green and Associates, or other companies, of using labour hire firms to place their unemployed clients into 'phantom jobs'.

The Minister must answer publicly and fully:

Exactly when he was first made aware of this practice. ● Who made him aware of it? ● Why he waited until after this matter was raised in Senate Estimates to begin a Departmental inquiry, even though evidence suggests he was made aware of it before hand. ●

Why Ms Leslie Riggs, Group Manager, Labour Market Group in the Department of Employment Workplace Relations and Small Business, gave verbal approval to Leonie Green and Associates to pursue this practice.

●

It is clear that Minister Brough was made aware of this practice as early as February. He was then further briefed by his Department on the 1st of June about the fact that 10% of all Job Matching payments were spurious.

"Yet it was only when Labor Senators Jacinta Collins and Kim Carr raised the issue in Senate Estimates that Minister Brough claims to have begun an inquiry.

"Mal's "malpractice" was to turn a blind eye in the hope that no one would ever find out about it and that it would make the Job Network look like it was getting more people jobs then it really was.

"Labor expects some comprehensive answers about Minister Brough's knowledge of this practice and why he failed to act. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
