Madeley Community Gets Net Benefit from Federal Investment in Kingsway Sporting Complex

Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Maxine McKew, today inspected work on the federally funded redevelopment of the Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex in Madeley in northern Perth.

Ms McKew joined Mayor Jon Kelly and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Simms from the City of Wanneroo for a walk-through of the complex which has received $2.8 million from the Rudd Labor Government.

"This 72 hectare complex has served the local community for 30 years across nine different sporting codes, so it is great to see it getting a new lease on life," said Ms McKew.

"More than half a million people use the Kingsway complex every year."

"It's fantastic too that more than 60 jobs will be created as part of the project management and construction stages.

"All across WA and the nation the Rudd Government's investment in projects like this through our Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) is cushioning local economies from the global economic recession, at the same time as delivering much-needed community facilities."

The RLCIP is part of the Government's $42 billion Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan.

The federal funding for the Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex is going towards redeveloping 57 existing netball courts including poles, nets and court furniture; improved drainage; upgrading the floodlighting at the indoor stadium; and landscaping a section of land connecting two court areas with pathways, seating and native vegetation.

Ms McKew said the overall redevelopment of this sports space caters for sports including cricket, hockey, soccer, rugby, football, little athletics, baseball, netball and badminton.

"This is great news for a rapidly growing region with a population expected to double to around 300,000 people by 2030," Ms McKew said.

"I congratulate the City of Wanneroo and the local community for their hard work in helping bringing this project to fruition."
