$2.7 MILLION FOR PORT FAIRY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Students and staff at Port Fairy Consolidated School will benefit from an Australian Government grant of $2.7 million for capital works, Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, announced today.

Announcing the funding on site at Port Fairy Consolidated School, Mr Hawker said that the funds will be used for the construction of general purpose classrooms, staff and administration facilities, library, art/craft, canteen, first aid and staff and student toilets.

“These new facilities will help the school to provide the best possible learning environment for students in the region,“ Mr Hawker said.

Mr Hawker said the Australian Government’s Capital Grants Programme for Schools has a particular focus on improving educational outcomes of educationally disadvantaged students.

“This project involves a significant amount of funding, which is an indication of the importance the Government places on developing and maintaining school infrastructure, particularly in rural and regional areas,” he said.

The Australian Government will provide an estimated $33 billion in direct funding to schools and students over the period 2005-08. A key element of this funding package is some $2.7 billion for school capital works and infrastructure projects over the next four years, including the $1 billion Investing In Our Schools program funding, which has already injected over $8.3 million into schools in Western Victoria.

“This demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to a strong and effective school system, maximising the opportunities for young Western Victorians,” Mr Hawker said.
