Warren Truss MP Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Federal Member for Wide Bay

SCALLOP WORKSHOP FOR HERVEY BAY Monday 8 October 2001

Hervey Bay has been chosen as the venue for a national Scallop Seeding workshop in December to discuss the use of Queensland's native 'saucer' scallops for seeding purposes, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss announced today.

The Board of the National Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the Queensland Department of Primary Industries have decided to hold the workshop in Hervey Bay following recommendations from Mr Truss.

"Hervey Bay produces some of the state's best scallops and is the ideal location for a scallop seeding workshop," Mr Truss said. "The city has also expressed an interest in trialling commercially seeded scallop beds which have the potential to create a new industry for the region."

He said Hervey Bay's large seagrass meadows could benefit from the natural filtration behaviour of scallops.

"The workshop is expected to be held on 4 December and will also consider at scallop seeding from a whole-of-business perspective. The workshop will address scientific, environmental, legislative, management and investment issues in relation to the initiative."
