340,000 Young People Miss Out In Upcoming Election - John Howard's Electoral Trick Worked Media Statement - 27th October 2007

Record numbers of young people - 18 to 24 -- will not be voting in the upcoming election - a boost for the Howard Government.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that up to 340,000 young people will be missing out on being part of the democratic process - due to electoral laws changed by John Howard.

In June 2006, the Howard Government passed laws which meant the electoral rolls closed shortly after he called the election and those on the roll only had three days to update their details.

Previously first time voters had seven days to enrol, and those on the roll had seven to update their details after the writs were issued.

Make no mistake, John Howard's electoral trick worked. He got his wish and up to 340,000 young people will not be eligible to vote.

A Rudd Labor Government has pledged to repeal the electoral laws.

Young Australians realise the Howard Government has lost touch with working families are so many issues - including the Kyoto Protocol, climate change, cost of living and housing affordability.

Just this morning, we discovered that the Howard Government considered ratifying the Kyoto Protocol a mere six weeks ago - and then rejected joining the world community.

Although the AEC and all those who have been urging Australians to make sure they are enrolled to vote should be congratulated for the overall roll total of 13,645,073, there remains one very worrying statistic.

From the announcement of the election date to the close of rolls in 2007, only 77,000 people were added to the roll.

By comparison, in 2004, more than 157,000 people were added before the rolls closed.
