Tasmania Celebrates Multiculturalism on Harmony Day

A Kingston Beach picnic, a citizenship ceremony in Smithon and the launch of a sporting project in Launceston will be among the highlights of today's Harmony Day 2002 in Tasmania, the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Mr Gary Hardgrave, said today.

"Community response to Harmony Day has been tremendous in Tasmania and has really helped to make tomorrow the biggest Harmony Day yet," the Minister said.

"We're encouraging all Tasmanian schools, business, community groups and government bodies to join in."

Harmony Day, which began in 1999, is emerging as Australia's largest national multicultural event. It coincides with the United Nations' Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

"Harmony Day is part of the Commonwealth Government's Living in Harmony initiative. Last September the Launceston City Council received a Living in Harmony grant for a project that encourages people from non-English speaking backgrounds to take part in local sporting and recreational activities," said Mr Hardgrave.

On 24 March the Council will officially launch Open Boundaries - Fairer Playing Fields at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Inveresk.

Harmony Day is managed by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs with assistance from the Council for Multicultural Australia.

The day provides Tasmanians with the opportunity to celebrate the benefits that cultural diversity brings to Australia.
