Yeppoon Scores $741,000 to Improve Health Care Services 3 April 2002

The people of Yeppoon and district will have access to a greater range of medical services, with the announcement that funding from two rural health initiatives has been combined to provide additional support from the Howard/Anderson Government.

Leader of the National Party in the Senate, Ron Boswell, today confirmed the funding worth a total of $2.9 million over the next two years to four rural private hospitals in Central Queensland, including the Mater Yeppoon Misercordiae Private Hospital which will receive $741,092 until June 2004 in order to upgrade and provide more services in the local area.

"This funding will ensure that people in the Yeppoon local area continue to receive the level of health services they need as well as providing specialist services which they may not have had access to previously," Senator Boswell said.

The funding from the Bush Nursing, Small Community and Regional Private Hospitals Program and the Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program is being provided to the Mater Yeppoon Misercordiae Private Hospital for a range of health programs including -

developing medical suites to attract and support additional specialists to establish amedical practice as well as providing an area for an after hours medical service;

attracting specialists to Gladstone to provide services that are in demand; ●

appointing a regional coordinator to work across the three Mater hospitals to develop innovative models of care and service delivery to provide improved outcomes and quality of care to the communities they serve and

●

enhancing information management infrastructure to support ●

videoconferencing technology to provide opportunities for telehealth in areas such as educational and support services for health care professionals (including telecommunications for diagnostic and treatment services);

GP Upskilling and Professional Support in general and respiratory physician services, orthopaedics and neurology; and ❍

Outreach services to the Rockhampton and Yeppoon region: ❍ ear nose and throat services ❍ opthalmology/obstetrics/gynaecology ❍

"This funding confirms the Howard/Anderson Government's commitment to supporting the long-term future of regional private hospitals and specialist services in small communities."

These programs are just two of a number of medical education, service and training initiatives announced in the Commonwealth Government's $562 million Regional Health Strategy: More Doctors, Better Services. The Regional Health Strategy features a range of short and longer-term initiatives to address the historic inequalities experienced by people living in rural, regional and remote regions of Australia.
