LABOR WELCOMES DEMOCRAT COMMITMENT TO SELECT COMMITTEE

Labor welcomes the commitment by the Australian Democrats to a Select Committee on the go vernment’s tax package.

It is clear that a consensus is emerging on the need for a thoroughgoing and broad ranging Senate inquiry.

This augurs well for the approach Labor has been advocating, one which ensures that the package is fully scrutinised and thereby throws into sharp relief its unfairness.

With the Democrats’ proposal on the table, there is now a basis for detailed discussion on the final form and timing of the inquiry.

With Labor, the Democrats. the Greens and Senator Harradine now making clear their commitment to a fundamental examination of the GST package, the Coalition parties now stand alone in trying to hide the detail.

What do they have to hide?
