Awards Recognise Seniors in Calare

Residents of the Federal electorate of Calare have been invited to nominate a Senior Australian for the Senior Australian of the Year Awards for 2001.

The Awards are part of the National Australia Day Council’s recognition of outstanding Australians and also include the Australian of the Year and Young Australian of the Year. All awards are the result of nominations made by the public.

Member for Calare, Peter Andren, says “It is very easy to nominate someone for the important and prestigious seniors award.”

“There are so many senior Australians whose contributions to our nation have helped forge a society that is the envy of many countries. This is our opportunity to recognise and thank these people.”

“The people nominated may not be household names but will be outstanding role models to the community, presenting a positive image of ageing through their significant contributions in a variety of ways to the community,” he said.

“Last year the contributions of 4 special senior Australians nominated in Calare were recognised through these awards.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to nominate other outstanding seniors who have shared their skills and experience across a range of fields”, Mr Andren said.

Senior Australian Achievers will be announced in July and August this year. The Senior Australian of the Year will be announced by the Prime Minister in Canberra in late September.

The person nominated should be aged 60 or over. Nomination forms are available from any Commonwealth Bank Branch or by visiting the National Australia Day Council website at www.nadc.com.au .

You can also call 1300 655 193 if you would like a nomination form sent to you.

Nominations must be received by Friday 6 July 2001.
