GP BULK-BILLING RATE JUMPS BY 11.4% IN BOOTHBY

There has been a dramatic rise in the number of people being bulk-billed in the electorate of Boothby following the Australian Government’s measures to strengthen Medicare.

The GP bulk-billing rate in Boothby has risen by 11.4% to 68.2%, according to figures released today for the 12 months ending June 2005.

Bulk-billing rates have gone up the greatest for those who need it the most - children and senior Australians.

Today’s figures show three out of four people across Australia are now bulk-billed when they visit their GP and more than 8 out of ten children and older Australians are bulk-billed.

The Government has been targeting these priority areas and it is pleasing to see our initiatives working to support those who especially need it.

GPs who bulk-bill Commonwealth Concession Card holders and children under 16 across most of Boothby receive extra incentive payments of $7.65.

In 2004-05, Medicare subsidised 236 million services, worth $9.9 billion in benefits. This represented 11.6 services and a $487 benefit for every Australian during the year.
