DUNWICH STUDENTS WIN COMMUNITY FUNDING

A school based programme, identified as a holistic approach to address the needs of Stradbroke Island students especially in relation to their isolation from mainland services will be funded by the Australian Government following an announcement today by Andrew Laming, Federal Member for Bowman.

The Australian Government will contribute almost $60,000 to the Gnaree Yarra - You and I Walk - Building the Capacity of Our Community Strategy and a part of the Whole of School Intervention Strategy.

The programme includes the provision of a community ICT centre, career pathway planning, access to recreational time pursuits, promoting positive interactions with other students, cultural induction programmes and Dare to Lead Programmes.

The main objective of the project is improved education outcomes and community capacity to support improved outcomes.

Expected outcomes include; improved literacy and numeracy skills, improved attendance and punctuality, increased retention, upskilling of parents and increased parent participation, curriculum changes, improved behaviour in and outside school, improved career development and pathways, and increased confidence and self esteem.

Mr Laming welcomed the Education funding and noted the positive impact that this programme will have on the broader Dunwich community.

“This strategy will focus on the implementation of creative approaches to improving the educational outcomes of Indigenous school students.

“This programme forms another part of the Australian Government’s continued commitment to improving Literacy and Numeracy skills amongst all school students.”
