Senator the Hon Grant Tambling

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Aged Care

CLP Senator for the Northern Territory

18 August 1999

Senator Tambling today welcomed the announcem ent by the Federal Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony, of $50,000 for the continuation for another year of the pilot volunteer home visiting program in Katherine.

Senator Tambling said the Federal Government will provide overall $870,000 to the Good Beginnings national parenting program.

Good Beginnings, through its national volunteer home visiting program, provides families with valuable guidance and support through regular home visits.

Senator Tambling said the national parenting program run by Good Beginnings helps empower parents by promoting confidence and belief in their own parenting skills.

The Federal Government provided the national Association of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN Australia) with more than $2 million to manage parenting programs. These additional funds will help Good Beginnings to further develop and foster stronger families.

The Katherine pilot program is part of four national pilot programs operating under the guidance of NAPCAN Australia.

“This pilot program showed some positive results for the families involved and will continue to provide support and assistance through targeted community based programs,” Senator Tambling said.

Senator Tambling endorsed the following description and sentiments that the Coordinator in Katherine, Ms Kate Bishop, expressed in correspondence regarding the program.

“We recognise that all parents are different. We don't tell parents what to do, but give them choices, resources and encouragement to be the parents they want to be.”

Good Beginnings has also been involved in a number of other initiatives including:

• the production of a development video for community service professionals working with families;

• the development of a report on community resources which help families acce ss the services they need; and

• the evaluation of the Interface Between Professional Home Visiting and Volunteer Home Visiting Programs.

“The Federal Government is proud to continue its support for projects like Good Beginnings that further strengthen Australian families and communities,” Senator Tambling said.
