ACTING FEDERAL LABOR LEADER JENNY MACKLIN

DEATH OF SIR JOH BJELKE-PETERSEN

On behalf of the Federal Labor Party, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Lady Florence Bjelke-Petersen and family on the death of former Queensland Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

Sir Joh was a larger than life character who dominated Queensland politics for many years and therefore has earned a place in Australian political history.

My colleague, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, yesterday paid tribute to Sir Joh for achievements during his 19 years as Premier of Queensland including his abolition of death duties, which paved the way for other States and the Federal Government to follow, and his negotiation of coal exports to Japan.

Labor had no more vigorous opponent than Sir Joh.

I wish his family well during this time of great sorrow.
