MEDIA RELEASE

LINDSAY TANNER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

SENATE THWARTS MEDIA OWNERSHIP BILL

The Australian Senate last night thwarted the Governments attempts to allow a handful of media owners to dominate the media in Australia.

Labor’s campaign against this bill has been vindicated. Enough Senators have accepted Labor’s arguments that the Bill would lead to too great a concentration of media ownership in Australia, at the expense of media diversity.

Thanks to Labor, Australians can breathe easy that their media will not be dominated by two or three media giants. The cross-media restrictions implemented by the former Labor Government will remain in place.

The Australian Senate acted in the best interests of all Australians last night. This is a great victory for Australian democracy. It is a great victory for media diversity.
