PRIME MINISTER

VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF SINGAPORE

I am pleased to announce that the Prime Minister of Singapore, HE Mr Lee Hsien Loong, will visit Australia from 13 to 17 June 2006.

I look forward to discussing with Prime Minister Lee ways to strengthen our close bilateral relationship, including on trade, investment, regional and security issues.

Australia’s bilateral relationship with Singapore is one of our most comprehensive in South-East Asia. Two-way trade was worth $12.6 billion in 2005. We also have strong people-to-people contacts. Singapore is Australia’s 10th largest source of international students and our 5th largest tourism market. Australia shares with Singapore a common approach towards regional security and stability, as reflected in our close defence linkages.

Prime Minister Lee will visit Canberra and Sydney during his time in Australia.
