NATIONAL CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ALIVE AND WELL

The turnout of around nine thousand carollers to the National Christmas Tree l ighting and Carols Concert in Canberra shows that the festive spirit in the national Capital is alive and well, Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government said today.

Senator Macdonald was involved in commencing the decorating of the national Christmas tree with Canberra school children. He also introduced the Governor General Sir William Deane and helped launch the National Christmas Tree on Federation Mall in front of Parliament House on Saturday night.

"The significance of lighting the National Tree goes beyond Canberra and out to the entire nation."

"As well as being part of an enjoyable family evening for Canberra residents and visitors, the event is important in our ongoing quest to promote Canberra our National Capital - as a warm and friendly people place and not just a workplace for politicians and bureaucrats."

Senator Macdonald congratulated the Salvation Army who raised over $10,000 on the night for their 1999 Christmas Appeal and the National Capital Authority for their organisation of the event.
