MEDIA RELEASE

PHONE ARRANGEMENTS FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Opposition Spokesman for Northern Australia, Senator Ian Macdonald, is advising people in storm and flood-affected areas of North and Far North Queensland who have been evacuated from their homes or whose phone service has been affected to contact Telstra for assistance.

“Telstra advise me that they are offering a number of services to their affected customers. This includes:

Free call diversion from their fixed line to another fixed or mobile service of their choice;

Telstra Mobile customers who have been evacuated from their homes or who have lost their service due to the storms and report this to Telstra will be charged at fixed line rates, for local and STD calls made on their mobile service (limited to one designated Telstra mobile per affected household or business).”

“To access the free call diversion or to report loss of their Telstra fixed service, customers should contact 13 22 03,” Senator Macdonald said.

“These offers will continue until customers can return to their home and any resulting network damage in the area has been repaired.”

Customers whose homes have been severely damaged by the storms and flooding will, in addition to the free diversion and fixed line rates for local and STD calls made on their designated Telstra mobile service, be offered:

Cancellation of a Telstra fixed phone service at existing premises with free number reservation to be provided for three months.

Free connection of a Telstra fixed phone service at one residence or business within a twelve-month period beginning from the date of the disaster.

Cancellation of a BigPond service at existing premises with free email address reservation to be provided for three months.

Free reconnection of a BigPond service at one residence or business within a twelve-month period beginning from the date of the disaster.

Telstra mobile customers who do not have a fixed line will receive a one off credit to the value of $50.00, limited to one mobile phone per household or business.

“I am advised that Telstra technicians continue to monitor the network and are working with emergency services to ensure communications are maintained. Additional technicians have been brought into the area and are working overtime to restore customers' services as quickly and safely as possible.”

“Affected residents can contact Telstra on 13 22 03 or my office on 1300 301 949 for assistance,” Senator Macdonald said.
