HON. SIMON CREAN MP 26th May 2004

Federal Labor Shadow Treasurer

COSTELLO GETS IT WRONG ON FAMILIES YESTERDAY AND CLEANS UP HIS MESS TODAY

John Howard and his backbench are fast realising how many people are missing out on the Peter Costello tax cuts. No wonder there were only 4 Liberals - Costelloites no less - prepared to defend the Government’s tax cuts in the Parliament.

In desperation, Peter Costello resorted to exaggerating the number of winners yesterday. His hubris and mischievous use of figures starred yesterday when he got it horribly wrong on the number of families living in three electorates in Australia. Having been caught out he’s trying to clean up his own mess today.

In the Parliament yesterday, Peter Costello claimed that:

"In the seat of Eden-Monaro, there are 53,813 families with children, …"

Wrong Mr Costello:

♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 33,398 families in the electorate. ♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 18,846 families with children (couples with children and sole parents with children - including students

aged 15-24) in the electorate.

In the Parliament yesterday, Peter Costello claimed that:

“.. there are 47,000 families in the electorate of Werriwa, 99.8 per cent of them receiving benefits ..”

Wrong Mr Costello:

♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 36,871 families in the electorate. ♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 28,007 families with children (couples with children and sole parents with children - including students

aged 15-24) in the electorate.

In the Parliament yesterday, Peter Costello claimed that:

“ … there a e 48,945 families in Bendigo, …” r

Wrong Mr Costello:

♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 31,734 families in the electorate. ♦ The 2001 Census records that there are only 19,175 families with children (couples with children and sole parents with children - including students

aged 15-24) in the electorate.

While Peter Costello keeps telling Australians that they’ve never had it so good, his flip-flop use of figures shows just how far he will go in playing fast and loose with the truth.
