Funding for New Aquatic Centre in Pinjarra

The Rudd Labor Government will provide $1.2 million towards the construction of the heated Murray Aquatic Centre at Pinjarra in Western Australia.

Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government, made the announcement in Pinjarra today with Shire of Murray Deputy President Wally Barrett.

Mr Albanese said that the project was expected to support 20 jobs during construction, as well as another 12 jobs over the longer term.

“The project is worth a total of $5.6 million and is delivering a significant boost to the region’s economy.

“And Pinjarra residents will benefit through a modern, first-class sporting facility over the coming years.

“Importantly, the new aquatic centre will include an exercise aquatic pool to deliver aqua-aerobic and injury recovery programs for community members,” he said.

The Shire of Murray project includes:

É Construction of an eight lane 25-metre swimming pool, a 25-metre children's leisure and exercise pool (including a swirl pool), spa, change rooms and car parking; É Expansion of the current kiosk and seating for 300 people; and É Heating of the pool at no extra cost through a micro-turbine that uses the by-

product of gas that powers the adjacent Murray Recreation Centre.

Mr Albanese said that the funding was part of our Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which was delivering a record $1 billion for nearly 5,000 projects across the nation.

“Across Australia, we are building and modernising community facilities, including town halls, libraries, community centres and sports grounds in partnership with local government’” he concluded.

The funding is conditional upon the council formalising a contract with the Government and meeting relevant conditions.
