New Equipment Arrives at St Vincent’s Hospital

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, today inspected new elective surgery equipment purchased by St Vincent’s Hospital from a $450,000 Rudd Government grant.

The $453,107 funding enabled the hospital to purchase much needed additional surgical equipment to help reduce waiting times for elective surgery.

The Funding is part of the $36.8 Million provided to Victorian Hospitals by the Rudd Government under Stage Two of the Elective Surgery plan.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon today visited the hospital as part of the Government’s road-testing of the National Health and Hospital Reform Commission's proposed reforms.

The Health Minister will outline the Commission’s recommendations, and meet with local health professionals to hear what they believe are the priorities in improving health and hospitals around the country.

Targeting key pressure points in our health system, like elective surgery waiting times, is a priority for the Rudd Government.

The funding announced today builds on the Government’s Budget commitments to important health services in Melbourne.

The Rudd Government announced in the recent Budget that over $715 million would be provided from the Health and Hospital fund for health and research facilities in Victoria:

• $426.1m for the new Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre

• $120m for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service

• $71m for the Monash Hospital Research Precinct

• $39.6m for construction and fit out of the Melbourne Neuroscience project at Parkville and Heidelberg

• $13m for the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria

• $14m for the Northern Health Precinct at the Northern Hospital, Epping

• $11.8m for a new clinical school at Werribee Mercy Hospital

• $4.7m for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute

The Rudd Government is taking concrete steps to improve Australia's health and hospital system after twelve years of neglect by the previous Liberal Government.
