MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Anthony Albanese MP Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government

24 February 2009 AA054/2009

RUDD GOVERNMENT DELIVERS $5.7 MILLION TO BUILD COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE IN REGIONAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Rudd Labor Government has today announced $5.7 million to build community infrastructure across regional Western Australia - part of our investment to support local jobs and boost the local economy.

The funding will be delivered from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program - the largest single investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history.

The $5.7 million will provide funding to local councils and shires for 56 infrastructure projects in regional communities from Kununurra to the Margaret River, from Tom Price to Esperance, and from Exmouth to Busselton in Western Australia.

Projects being funded include $250,000 to expand the basketball courts in Kununurra, $240,000 to upgrade the library in Paraburdoo, and $300,000 to build an extension to the Esperance Museum.

[Details of projects and locations are below]

Without federal funding, these projects would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket.

The Community Infrastructure Program is aimed at stimulating local economies and helping communities respond to the global financial crisis.

Investing in local projects that are ready to go is a great way to generate construction activity and local jobs.

It will also deliver much-needed infrastructure to improve the quality of life in local communities.

More than 3,600 projects have been submitted under the first round of the Community Infrastructure Program and the Rudd Government is getting on with the job.

These councils will receive a contract shortly. I encourage them to sign and return it as quickly as possible so funds can be released.

More projects will be announced as they are approved over the next few weeks.
