The Minister for Defence the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon and Labor Senator for Queensland Jan McLucas announced today that a $793.1 million construction proposal for new facilities and supporting infrastructure at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville, Queensland and other Defence bases around Australia will start later this year.

Around $385 million of the $793.1 million will be invested in new facilities and supporting infrastructure at Lavarack Barracks and the Townsville Field Training Area, which will be a great boost for jobs and the local economy.

“The new facilities will address the needs of the Enhanced Land Force Stage 1 capabilities, particularly the relocation of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment from Sydney to Townsville,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“The project will also provide facilities and infrastructure at Army bases in Kapooka, Singleton, Holsworthy, Puckapunyal and Perth. Facilities will also be provided at RAAF Bases Amberley, Edinburgh and Richmond for increased joint enabling elements resulting from the establishment of enhanced land force capabilities.”

The $793.1 million proposal has been recommended to proceed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works and this recommendation has been approved by Parliament.

Construction is planned to commence in mid 2009 and be completed in late 2011.
