Sen Kerry Nettle Media Release

24 June 2003

Greens to launch Higher Ed campaign to coincide with inquiry

"Over the coming months of the inquiry I will be visiting campuses in every state and territory to help mobilise students, staff, parents and community members to defend the universality and accessibility of our public university system.

"I will be producing my own range of materials, to counter Dr Nelson's propaganda, in order that the community can get an understanding of the impact of these 'reforms.'

"Public education is under continued threat from this government, the work of this inquiry will confirm that fact," Senator Kerry Nettle said.

"Already community feedback reveals a deep anger at this Government's cost shifting onto students and their families.

"The public is happy to pay for the universal, free (to the student) public education system that this country deserves. This is the strong feedback that we are receiving, but that the Minister does not want to hear.

"The Greens are particularly concerned about student poverty, industrial relations and the attack on academic freedoms, as well as the continuing injustice of the user-pays system.
