Dr Paul Twomey named as CEO of the National Office for the Information Economy.

The Minister for Communications, the Information Economy and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, today announced the appointment of Dr Paul Twomey as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE).

"Dr Twomey will bring to NOIE extensive experience in both the public and private sector, including policy and new business development. He has a thorough knowledge of, and great enthusiasm for, the exciting potential for Australia of the information economy," Senator Alston said.

"His appointment is a further demonstration of the Government's firm commitment to ensuring that the needs of all Australians are recognised during the development of the legal and regulatory framework for the information economy."

Senator Alston expressed his deep appreciation of the efforts of Dr Rod Badger, who as Acting CEO has overseen the establishment and activities of NOIE since October last year. NOIE is already actively involved in development of Government policy in a range of areas, and will cohost a major national summit on electronic commerce this April.

"Dr Twomey's appointment will allow NOIE to accelerate its work load, thus ensuring that Australia remains at the forefront of developments in the information economy," Senator Alston said.

The Government established NOIE last year to develop, coordinate and overview broad policy relating to:

. establishing the regulatory, legal and physical infrastructure environment for online activities,

. facilitating electronic commerce;

. ensuring a consistent Commonwealth position in international fora;

. overseeing policies for applying new technology to government administration and information and service provision.

NOIE is overseen by an Advisory Board of Directors drawing heavily on private sector expertise. In addition to Dr Twomey, NOIE will shortly be appointing project managers who will oversee tightly focussed policy units.

Dr Twomey is currently Executive General Manager, Europe for Austrade. He is also the leader of Austrade's global information technology and telecommunications network which assists Australian ITT firms market their products and services to key European, American and Asian markets.

Prior to his European appointment, Dr Twomey was Austrade's Executive General Manager Strategic Development from 1994-97 after five years with the global management consultancy McKinsey Company.
