Michelle O’Byrne MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BASS SHADOW PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR COMMUNICATIONS

PRESS RELEASE

O’Byrne ejected during War debate

Federal Member for Bass Michelle O’Byrne was ejected from parliament today in another disgraceful example of the Howard governments attempt to silence legitimate community concern over its decision to commit troops to war in Iraq..

Ms O’Byrne said ‘I have received numerous deputations not only from local interest groups but from Church groups and Councils all over Australia”

“As a member elected to the Australian Parliament it is my job to carry the concerns of those I represent to the government.”

“To be ejected for doing my job indicates how far this government is prepared to go to silence legitimate criticisms for its actions.”

Every representation made to me agrees that this war is neither authorised by the UN nor justified.

Australian involvement in a war with Iraq without UN authorisation it is not in Australia’s national interests, or in the interests of maintaining international peace and security.

Ms O’Byrne said ‘I will go back into the house as soon as I can and continue to represent the people who elected me. Neither John Howard nor any of his bullyboys will stop me doing my job for the people of Bass.
