Governor-General to visit Cape York and Ton es Strait

The Governor-General, Sir William Deane, and Lady Deane, will make a four day visit to Far North Queensland this week. They will visit communities on Cape York and in the Torres Strait, accompanied by the Chair of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, Ms Evelyn Scott, and the Deputy Chair, Sir Gustav Nossal, and Lady Nossal.

During the visit, Sir William will officially open The 100% In Control Croc Eisteddfod at Weipa. Students from some 16 regional schools will take part in the non-competitive dance and music Festival of Stories and Dreams, organised by The Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.

Sir William hopes to highlight the importance of reconciliation for all Australians and the extent of the serious health problems being addressed by Cape York communities.

Sir William and Lady Deane will arrive at Thursday Island on Tuesday, 7 July. On Wednesday they will visit Yorke Island. On Thursday they will visit the community at Bamaga on Cape York, and later fly to Weipa for the opening of the Croc Eisteddfod. On Friday they will go to Cooktown to visit the Milbi

Wall and the Hope Vale community, and later visit a primary school at Cairns before returning to Canberra.
