HON.SIMON CREAN MP Federal Labor Shadow Minister for Trade

GOVERNMENT MUST CONDEMN EU EXPORT SUBSIDIES

Labor is angered by reports the EU is reinstating wheat export subsidies.

This seriously undermines the EU’s commitment to eliminate export subsidies.

Australia must lead the fight against this unfair practice.

Now is not the time for major trading powers to be undermining the objectives of the WTO Doha Round.

The EU must show leadership at this crucial time, particularly when WTO members will this year elect a new Director-General.

Mark Vaile must condemn the EU’s actions at the Davos Trade Ministers’ meeting.

As Cairns Group Chair, Mark Vaile must defend the interests of free trading farmers.

He must exercise authority and show the Cairns Group remains an effective force.

Labor has always said the WTO remains the best mechanism to open new markets and to end unfair trading practices.

Australia must be bold.

The EU’s actions must be condemned.

Australia must vehemently fight to cut trade barriers and end unfair trade subsidies.
