MEDIA RELEASE Senator the Hon Sandy Macdonald Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate

NSW Nationals Senator Sandy Macdonald has congratulated Trade Minister Mark Vaile for securing a commitment that Iraq will continue to buy Australian wheat.

"This is a tremendous outcome for Australia. Wheat trade between the two countries is a $2 billion market, and it is vitally important for Australian wheat growers that trade with Iraq continues," Senator Macdonald said.

"Iraq has stated that they are happy to accept Australian wheat and other Australian products. Minister Vaile and Iraq Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Chalabi have agreed that both Governments continue to work together closely to ensure the trading relationship prospers," he said.

"Any suggestion that Minister Vaile has achieved anything other than a favourable outcome for Australian wheat growers is absurd."

"The Nationals will continue to do everything they can to protect the interests of Australian wheat growers. Our policy is to support a single desk - the corporate governance of a single desk is a separate issue," Senator Macdonald said.
