Andrew Laming MP Federal Member for Bowman

MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 14 September 2005 MR05.076

Andrew Laming congratulated Redlands College Principal, Mr Allan Todd for a victory on student report cards over the weekend.

The staff at Redlands College sought an amendment to Federal Minister Brendan Nelson's report card reforms, to ensure that reporting of student rankings within a class is available to parents on request, rather than a compulsory inclusion. That campaign succeeded last week with agreement from Canberra.

Following discussions with Minister Nelson last week and detailing the concerns of Redland College and other local schools, Andrew Laming gained this policy concession and informed Redlands College of the changes last week.

Compulsory reporting of class quartiles will now only be required at the request of individual parents.

Andrew Laming congratulated the staff at Redland College. “It is important that politicians remember we are not experts in every field. The teaching staff made a strong case and I am delighted with the result.”

Minister Nelson said he was willing to review the requirement for quartile reporting on school report cards if he received a submission from the QLD State Education department or from the Independent Schools Association.

Plain English report cards will remain in place, giving parents a clear understanding of how the child is learning in each subject, while removing any concerns which teachers had regarding mandatory quartile reporting.

Mr Laming said that Plain English Report Cards had received overwhelming support from parents however, there can be no substitute for listening to the experienced and professional teachers.

“I wish to thank all teachers at every school staff meeting where suggestions about Redland school issues have been discussed.”
