Federal Labor must oppose Ruddock's homophobia

30th Mar 06

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called upon all parties in the Federal Parliament to oppose any legislation that undermines the ACT's new laws allowing civil unions for same sex couples.

"Today's threat from Attorney General Philip Ruddock to legislate against the ACT's new civil unions law is homophobic and should be opposed by all parties," Senator Nettle said.

"Philip Ruddock's comments are about using homophobic dog-whistling to try to wedge Federal Labor. The Greens urge Labor to call his bluff and stand up for equality for all Australians.

"The Labor party supported the last piece of homophobic legislation the government introduced - the Marriage Act amendment, This time they must do better and stand up for equality.

"The Greens will be opposing any and all moves to undermine the civil union laws of the ACT or any other state that chooses to introduces similar laws.

"The federal government should be showing leadership in uniting our community and growing respect for difference. Instead Mr Ruddock seems hell bent on attacking same sex couples for political gain."
