Surprised Minister gets a taste of the talent at Nambucca High School

When the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, Dr Brendan Nelson, and local member Luke Hartsuyker visited the Nambucca Heads High School last Wednesday they were looking forward to discussing a range of initiatives which are

occurring at the school.

However, what caught them a little by surprise was a theatrical and musical performance which was put on by local students.

Having discussed specific issues, such as programmes for the disadvantaged students, teaching students business and office of skills and education funding, Dr Nelson and Mr Hartsuyker were escorted into the theatrette of the school.

There local students acted out a short scene which culminated in student Grant Archer doing an excellent rendition of “Angle in the Centrefold”.

Mr Hartsuyker said the Minister was not prepared for such a vibrant and energetic performance but believed it was representative of the good work which is being carried out at Nambucca Heads High School.

“In little over an hour Principal Hilton Humphries provided a comprehensive insight into the diverse range of educational programmes which are being delivered for local students,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“I know the Minister was very impressed with the school’s commitment to targeting disadvantaged children and in particular indigenous students.

“The Minister also commented on the Neil Gerard’s education programme which is teaching students all the skills involved in establishing their own business.

“The performance of the drama and musical students at the end really did highlight how the teachers at the school were giving students an opportunity in such a broad range of interests.”

Dr Nelson’s visit to Nambucca High was part of a tour of the Cowper electorate by the Minister.

Last year Dr Nelson met with Grahame Beatton and Mark Holdsworth when the school won a major literacy and numeracy award in Canberra.

The award recognised the positive results which were being achieved in the school through innovative and pro-active commitments to improving numeracy and literacy for all students.
