The Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will visit in India later this month to strengthen ties with this vitally important economic partner.

The Government is committed to taking its relationship with India to a higher level and engaging with India on a long-term, strategic basis.

Ms Gillard will visit New Delhi and Chennai in a five day visit between August 30 and September 3.

During the visit she plans to meet with Mr Kapil Sibal, Minister for Human Resource Development and other government officials.

Ms Gillard also plans to visit a number of educational institutions and is also scheduled to meet with Indian students who have studied in Australia.

During the visit Ms Gillard will discuss the Government’s recent moves to improve the quality of education for overseas students in Australia, including the re-registration of education providers, the review of the act governing international students being undertaken by Bruce Baird, and the International Students Round Table in September.
