20 July, 2009

Trade Official Killed in Jakarta It is with profound sadness that we have today received official confirmation of the death of Craig Senger, a Trade Commissioner with Austrade, as a result of the attacks in Jakarta on Friday, 17 July 2009.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to Craig’s wife and family. Our thoughts are with you during this time of terrible loss.

Australian officials are working with Craig’s wife and family to provide them with support and help make appropriate arrangements.

Mr Senger joined Austrade 11 years ago, and was posted to Jakarta in 2008 where he took up the role of Trade Commissioner, attached to the Australian Embassy. In this role, he served the Australian people by promoting our international business interests. At the time of his death, Craig was attending a high-level business meeting in the JW Marriott Hotel.

At this time, we also remember Garth McEvoy and Nathan Verity, the two other Australians who were killed, as well as many from other nationalities who died or were injured in these cowardly attacks. I convey our heartfelt sympathies to their families as well.

The Australian Government takes the safety and security of Australian citizens and officials very seriously as they are exposed to an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.

Following earlier attacks, we undertook an extensive upgrade of our security arrangements in Jakarta, and we will again review our security practices to make certain that everything possible is being done to ensure the safety of our officials who are representing Australia’s interests overseas.

Indonesia continues to be an important commercial partner for Australia and the Australian Government remains committed to growing our trade and investment links.

We will continue to provide businesses with advice on how to better understand and manage their risks and help maintain the safety of Australians as they conduct their business overseas because this is in the long-term interest of our country.

The Australian Government wishes to thank the Indonesian authorities for their cooperation and assistance in these difficult circumstances.
