Today I had the pleasure of officially opening Newcastle's new Maritime Centre - the culmination of years of tireless effort from many within the local community.

Located in a refurbished heritage-listed building at Lee Wharf in the Honeysuckle Development area, the Maritime Centre will become a significant heritage and tourism asset for the City of Newcastle and the Hunter region, as well as a base of excellence in maritime education and research.

The Centre houses world class exhibitions and displays covering Newcastle's rich maritime history - one stretching back almost 150 years to 1860s.

It showcases the local and national importance of Newcastle's maritime industry, and includes various boats, shipping models, photographs, tools, interactive features and much more.

Visitors to the area will be able to experience first-hand the vital role the port has played in the development of the region. It is now the country's largest coal export terminal.

Dedicated Maritime Society volunteers will be on hand to ensure locals and tourists alike make the most of their visit to the Centre.

I congratulate the local community for working together and would like to acknowledge the financial support provided by the Newcastle Maritime Museum Society, Newcastle Port Corporation, Hunter Water and Newcastle City Council, as well as in-kind contributions from local businesses and institutions.

Without this broad community support, projects such as this would not be possible.

The Centre also received $770,000 from the Australian Government.
