Sydney community must be more involved in airport policy.
Federal Member for Batman Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Transport, Infrastructure and Tourism
Martin Ferguson MP
MEDIA RELEASE 12 June 2003
SYDNEY COMMUNITY MUST BE MORE INVOLVED IN AIRPORT POLICY
Federal Labor is committed to a partnership with state and local government on urban development.
This must include more community consultation and involvement in Federal decisions that impact on local communities.
Martin Ferguson told the Western Sydney Transport Forum today that the Howard Government is not listening to the views of the Sydney community on airport and aviation policy.
The Howard Government is selling airports without any proper plan in place for Sydney’s future aviation needs.
This decision was made without consultation or consideration of the future needs of local communities.
The future of the smaller basin airports and a future second Sydney airport has significant ramifications on the design and development of this region and the Federal Government is ignoring this.
Federal Labor has listened to the community and we responded with the decision to keep the small airports in public ownership and further consult on Sydney’s aviation needs.
The sale of these airports must be abandoned now to allow proper community consultation on airport policy.
Mr Ferguson also said that Labor’s Federal Platform is under review including the policy to build a second airport in the Sydney basin.
He said this review is an open process and encouraged community input into Labor’s policy.
