One week left for Queensland flood victims to make claim

Queenslanders affected by flooding earlier this year have until Monday, July 4, to lodge a claim for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment.

Minister for Human Services Tanya Plibersek said Centrelink had so far granted more than 398,000 claims to Queensland flood victims, worth almost $464 million.

“While most of those affected may have already lodged a claim for assistance, we appreciate some people may have decided to delay lodging a claim while they focused their efforts on the clean-up,” Ms Plibersek said.

“I strongly encourage people affected by these floods to contact Centrelink before July 4 and test their eligibility for assistance.”

Ms Plibersek said $1,000 and $400 was available for adults and children respectively, under the payment.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payments is available for a person:

o whose principal place of residence has been destroyed, or; o whose principal place of residence sustained major damage, or; o who was unable to gain access to their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more, or;

o who was stranded in their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more, or; o whose principal place of residence was without electricity, water, gas, sewerage services or another essential service for at least

48 hours (a utility failure) and the utility failure was caused by damage to public or private infrastructure, or;

o who was seriously injured, or; o who is the immediate family member of an Australian who died as a direct result of the disaster, or; o who is a principal carer of a dependent child who has

experienced any of the above.
